Provigil / Nuvigil (modafinil) promotes wakefulness by altering the levels of some neurotransmitters in the brain. Provigil is used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work sleep disorder. Modafinil belongs to a class of drugs known as eugeroic medication, which are Class IV controlled substances. Schedule IV substances are defined as drugs with a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence that stimulate activity of the central nervous system.

Dosage

Take Provigil or Nuvigil strictly as prescribed. The usual dosage for narcolepsy and OSA is one dose each day in the morning. For sleep disorder due to shift work, the usual dose is one tablet an hour before the start of a shift. Do not double-dose to make up for a missed dose. Instead, continue the next day with the regular schedule.
