Ditropan / Novitropan /
Lyrinel (
generic name: oxybutynin) is a medication designed to alleviate symptoms associated with
urinary incontinence, such as urgency, frequency, leakage, inability to control the bladder, and difficulty urinating.
The muscle in the wall of the bladder is called the detrusor muscle. It can sometimes contract in uncontrollable spasms, and this is often referred to as having an
overactive or unstable bladder. An overactive detrusor muscle can cause an increase in the number of times a person needs to pass urine, uncontrollable urges to pass urine, or involuntary leakage of urine.
Oxybutynin relaxes the bladder muscles by blocking cholinergic (or muscarinic) receptors on the surface of the muscle cells. It also inhibits sudden muscle contractions, thereby aiding in the control of urine release. This medication belongs to the class of anticholinergic and antispasmodic agents.
Dosage
The usually prescribed dosage for adults is one 5 mg tablet taken two to three times daily, with a maximum recommended dose of four tablets per day.
For children 5 years of age and older, the usual dosage is one 5 mg tablet taken twice daily, with a maximum of three tablets per day. Caution is advised, as they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine and because they are at increased risk of side effects. For bedwetting treatment, the last dose should be administered at bedtime.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. However, if it is nearly time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double-dose to make up.
Storage
Store Ditropan tablets at a temperature below 25°C/72°F, in a dry place, and out of reach of children.
