Aventyl / Nortriptelyine / Nortylin (generic name: nortriptyline) is a medication primarily prescribed for the treatment of depressive states. Its main function is to restore the natural balance of certain brain chemicals (neurotransmitters). It is therapeutically classified as a tricyclic antidepressant.
Its mode of action is believed to be the inhibition of the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmitters at nerve synapses (junctions).
Nortriptyline is also frequently prescribed to treat nerve pain in adults, and for bed wetting in children.
Dosage
The doctor will set the required dosage depending on the condition being treated. Aventyn comes in two strengths: 10mg, and 25mg. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. If a dose is skipped, take it as soon as this is realized. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed dose.Â
Tablets should be swallowed whole, not chewed. Do not halve or crush the tablet. They may be taken with or after a meal.Â
Storage
Store in a dry place with a temperature below 25°C. Take note of the expiry date on the package and do not use it after that date. Follow our tips to prevent medication mishaps.Â
Caution
The drug can increase sensitivity to the sun. To prevent this, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, wear protective clothing, and use sunscreen when outdoors.
