Orthovisc (hyaluronic acid) is used to treat knee joint pain caused by osteoarthritis in patients who do not get adequate relief from simple pain relievers or exercise and physical therapy. Hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan) is a naturally occurring lubricant found in healthy knee joints. Othovisc is a viscosupplement that is fully biocompatible with natural hyaluronan.
Dosage
Orthovisc can only be administered by a doctor. The normal program is a weekly injection in the affected joint, for three or four consecutive weeks.

Most people injected with Orthovisc do not experience any negative side effects. Doctors prescribe Orthovisc because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.
Some of the side effects that have been reported include pain, swelling, heat, rash, itching, bruising, or redness. These reactions are generally mild and should clear up easily.
Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
People with osteoarthritis in the knee joints may not have been able to find pain relief with simple pain medication or exercise. Injections of Orthovisc can replace the missing hyaluronic acid, which acts as a lubricant and cushioning gel that separates the bones bearing weight in the knee. This can provide long-term or partial relief from pain and restore flexibility.
