Lustral / Zoloft/ Serenada (generic name: sertraline) is used to treat depression and can also treat panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Sertraline belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin response inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the levels of a mood-enhancing hormone called serotonin in the brain. SSRIs work by preventing serotonin from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. This helps prolong the mood-enhancing effect of any released serotonin, and this helps to relieve depression.

Dosage

The prescribing doctor sets the dose according to the specific needs of a patient. The tablets may be taken with or without food. Don’t take the medicine with grapefruit juice or drink the juice while on a course of sertraline It can cause a spike in the levels of the chemical in the blood.

It may take four to six weeks for sertraline to work fully. If doctors decide to discontinue treatment by sertraline, they may recommend reducing the dose gradually to help prevent withdrawal side effects.

Mild side effects may include:

  • insomnia
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • headache
  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • dry mouth
  • ejaculation failure
  • fatigue
  • flu-like symptoms (chest cold, sore throat, runny nose)
  • changes in appetite

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult with a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

There are some less common but potentially serious side effects that can occur. Report to a doctor immediately if:

  • there are symptoms of depression with thoughts of self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • a severe skin rash that leads to the onset of blisters, (sometimes also on the mouth and tongue) develops. These may be symptoms of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
  • there are feelings of agitation, confusion, diarrhea, high temperature, rise in blood pressure, excessive sweating and rapid heartbeat, they could be symptoms of serotonin syndrome
  • the skin and whites of the eyes turn yellow, which may be indicative of liver damage.

If a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) such as swelling of the face, tongue or throat makes it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, or sloughing of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.

The symptoms of conditions like depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are often associated with low levels of serotonin. Serotonin is the body’s natural “feel good” hormone that regulates mood. When serotonin is at normal levels, a person will feel focused, emotionally stable, happier, and calmer.

Lustral / Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting the reuptake of the hormone.

  • What exactly does sertraline do?
Lustral / Zoloft increases the quantity of serotonin in the brain, helping to regulate mood. It is prescribed to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Sertraline belongs to a group of medications called selective serotonin response inhibitors (SSRIs).
  • How long can you stay on sertraline?
Most doctors recommend that antidepressants are taken for at least 6 months to a year after the symptoms have subsided. It is important to understand that Sertraline does not cure the conditions for which it is prescribed, but rather is a way to reduce the frequency and depth of symptoms. It can improve the quality of life of patients while it is being taken, but discontinuing use of Lustral can result in the return of depression. Any changes in dosing should be discussed with the treating physician.
  • What are the symptoms of Zoloft withdrawal?
Zoloft withdrawal symptoms like agitation, tremors, and headaches may start to be felt within 5-7 days of stopping the medication. These symptoms could persist for up to a fortnight and it's even possible that they may be more severe or last for several months or more. The severity and length of the withdrawal symptoms largely depend on for how long a person has been taking sertraline. Doctors usually recommend tapering off the dose rather than discontinuing the treatment unless there are exceptional side effects.
  • How long do sertraline side effects last?
The common side effects such as nausea, headaches and sleep problems are more likely to be felt when a person first starts taking Zoloft or when the dosage is increased. They are usually mild and should clear up after a few of weeks once the body adapts to sertraline's effects. If side effects persist or worsen, consult with a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
  • Can I have a glass of wine on Zoloft?
Doctors generally advise to completely avoid drinking alcohol while being treated with Zoloft. Even a small quantity of alcohol can interfere with the medication and may cause unwanted side effects. Drinking alcohol can also make depression and anxiety worse.
